Hookworms are blood-sucking worms that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Hookworms are blood-sucking worms that live in the pet's intestine. If your pet is lethargic, anaemic and is losing weight, it could have a hookworm infection. Hookworms cannot be seen by the naked eye due to their tiny size. However, the list below outlines some common signs of a hookworm infection. Pets should be wormed on a regular basis.

Common signs of a hookworm infection:

  • Anemia - pale pink gums
  • Poor coat
  • Poor growth
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Pneumonia

Warning: Hookworms can be transferred to humans. Ensure pets are wormed regularly, the environment cleaned of stools and good hygiene such as washing hands in warm, soapy water is practised. For more information, seek advice from a medical practitioner.

Example of an intestinal worming schedule for pets:

  • Every 2 weeks from 2-12 weeks of age
  • Monthly to 6 months of age
  • Every 3 months from 6 months of age

Always seek veterinary advice for a tailored intestinal, heartworm and flea control program for your pet.

Pets should be given worming medication on a regular basis, particularly the very social dog that comes into contact with other pets or areas where other pets frequent such as kennels or dog parks.
