Tapeworm

Tapeworms can be easily prevented through regular flea treatment.

OVERVIEW

Tapeworms are segmented worms. They are transmitted by fleas and cause infection when the pet ingests the fleas. If you see worm segments around the anus, it is important to treat your pet for worms and fleas immediately.

SIGNS

Common signs of a tapeworm infection:

  • Flea infestation - tapeworms are transmitted through the ingestion of fleas
  • Tapeworm segments appearing around anus - cucumber seed-like
  • Diarrhoea

MANAGEMENT

Example of an intestinal worming schedule for pets:

  • Every 2 weeks from 2-12 weeks of age
  • Monthly to 6 months of age
  • Every 3 months from 6 months of age
  • Regular flea treatment

Always seek veterinary advice for a tailored intestinal, heartworm and flea control program for your pet.

TIPS

Pets should be given worming medication on a regular basis, particularly the very social dog that comes into contact with other pets or areas where other pets frequent such as kennels or dog parks.
