Tear staining

Tear staining is most commonly seen in white-haired dogs with short noses such as the Shih-Tzu, Maltese, Chihuahua.


When the tears overflow from the eyes they can cause tear staining. Tear stains are the red discolouration under the pets eyes. There are a number of reasons that cause tears to overflow. This can occur in any dog but is most commonly is seen in white-haired dogs with short noses such as the Shih-Tzu, Maltese, Chihuahua.


Common signs of an eye problem:

  • Squinting
  • Pawing at eye
  • Discharge
  • Redness

If your pet shows any of these signs, seek veterinary attention.


Common causes of tear staining:

  • Allergies
  • Hair irritation
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Glaucoma
  • Eye foreign body
  • Blocked tear ducts
  • Inturned eyelashes
  • Dry eye
  • Breed-related


Tips to help manage tear staining:

  • Wipe eyes regularly with sterile saline
  • Regular grooming to avoid hair irritating the eyes
  • Training of the hair around the eyes to grow away from the eyes. This can be done using a damp cloth and wiping the hair away from the eyes.
  • Avoid known allergens

If your pet suddenly develops excessive tears, red eyes or rubbing of the eyes, seek veterinary attention.
